How to stop your whippet from chasing

Stopping a Whippet from chasing can be challenging due to their strong instinctual drive to chase moving things, that might be moving objects or those pesky Squirrels. However, with consistent training and proper management, you can redirect this behaviour whilst keeping your Whippet safe. Here are some simple steps to help you prevent your Whippet from chasing:

  1. Obedience Training: Training is essential to ensure your Whippet responds to commands promptly. Basic commands like "come," "stay," and "leave it." can help immensely. Consistent training helps keep your Whippets focus on you and not the busy world around them.

  2. Use a Leash and Harness: Simple but effective!

  3. Distraction and Reward: Carry high-value treats and a tug toy for distration on walks. Use the distraction and reward to become the most interesting play mate on their walk.

  4. Positive Reinforcement: Praise your Whippet for good behavior and for following your commands. Positive reinforcement encourages them to listen and stay focused on you. Our friend Ella at Kirby Dog Training uses positive reinforcement, we recommend you go speak to her.

  5. Play and Exercise: Whippets have high energy levels, so make sure they get enough exercise and playtime. You might be wondering when this playful energy subsides? Read our blog on "when do whippets calm down" here.

  6. Professional Help: If your Whippet's chasing behavior is particularly challenging to manage, consider seeking help from a professional dog trainer or behaviourist. We recommend Behaviour By Becca.

  7. Muzzle: In extreme cases or for safety reasons, you can use a basket muzzle. It allows your Whippet to pant and drink water but prevents them from picking up objects or chasing.

  8. Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate situations where your Whippet might want to chase. This allows you to intervene before they start chasing.

  9. Stay Consistent: Consistency is key when training your Whippet. Everyone in your household should use the same commands and methods to prevent confusion.

Remember that patience and persistence are essential when modifying your Whippet's behavior. Chasing is an instinctual behavior deeply rooted in their genetics, so it may take time to redirect their focus and keep them safe during walks and outdoor activities.
