The Best Tried and Tested Sighthound Essentials

The Best Tried and Tested Sighthound Essentials

Tried, tested and much loved essentials for whippets, italian greyhounds, lurchers and their owners.

We’re big believers in investing in functional, well-crafted products, and shopping locally wherever possible. There’s so much to choose from out there, it can be overwhelming, and in some cases, a bit of a waste of money.

We’ve pulled together a list of our tried and tested accessories and essentials for you and your sighthound. For each product we've included a guide to it's longevity and how frequently we use them too. So, whether you're a long time whippet owner, or just welcoming a hound to your life, this is the ultimate sighthound gift guide, we hope you find it useful.

1. The Best Whippet Collar & Lead

Brindle & Whyte Atacama Martingale Set

The Best Whippet Collar

There are so many reasons to love Brindle and Whyte. First and foremost, the collars and leads are simply beautiful. Designed for active hounds, they’re chic, functional and super easy to clean - you can pop them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. There’s lots of colours to choose from - we love the neutrals as they compliment our Occam coats perfectly. Another great thing about the Atacama collars is that they don’t rub, so no bald patches on those lovely long necks.

Lifespan: 3+ years (and still going strong)

Usage: Every single day

The Atacama Collars start at £27.50 // The Atacama Leads start at £20

2. The Best Whippet Harness

Perfect Fit

FT. handmade snood by Josie + Tui

Finding a harness that fits a sighthound can be tricky because of their deep chests and narrow waists. Perfect Fit is literally a perfect fit. Made from a soft fleece and webbing, these harnesses are comfortable, secure and easy to keep clean. They’re designed to allow freedom of movement - unlike some harnesses that can be restrictive on the front legs. The sizing guide is a little bit complicated but their customer service is fantastic and will help you find the right fit for your dog.

Lifespan: 2+ years (and counting)

Usage: Almost every day

Prices start at £33

3. The Best Dog Chews & Long Lasting Treats

Long lasting chews are an absolute essential for any dog owner. We have tried almost every single chew and treat on the market and found that only a few are actually ‘long lasting’ and approved by even the fussiest of whippets.

  • Pizzle aka Bully Sticks - These chews can last up to an hour depending on the size. Whippets love them, they’re also good for keeping their teeth clean. The only downside is the smell. They really can stink out a room quite quickly so if you’re looking for something to keep your dog occupied with whilst your down the pub you may want to try something else from this list.

Lifespan: 30 mins - 1 hour (depending on the size)

Usage: 1-2 per week depending on your dogs treat allowance and diet

Packs of 10 from £13.99

  • Yak Chew - These are great long-lasting chews without the odour. It can sometimes take a little bit of encouragement to get them going on these but once they start chewing you’ll be onto a winner.

Lifespan: 1-2 weeks (sessionable chewing)

Usage: 1-2 per month depending on your dogs treat allowance and diet

Shop from £4.99

Some whippets love their chews to be held for them - yes, we know, they are spoilt hounds - and Chewden that does just this. It's a nifty little product that will be available from January 2022, it keeps the chew stable and means you don’t have to give up a hand whilst they chomp away.

4. The Best Veterinary Advice

Vidivet App

When your dog becomes unwell it can be hard to know whether their symptoms warrant a trip to the vet. If you’re a bit of a worrier then Vidivet is a great app to try out. Starting at £18 per year, Vidivet gives you vet access and quick responses to all the questions and concerns you might have. The app allows you to send a message, photos or video to a qualified professional, getting a response within minutes.

Lifespan: For as long as you require advice

Usage: Unlimited

Yearly subscriptions start at £18

5. The Best Whippet Coats

Occam

It wouldn’t be a definitive sighthound guide without including a few coats and jumpers.

Naturally, we’re including our own styles, including our Flint jumper - a great all rounder that fits snug underneath a harness and looks beautiful with a Brindle & Whyte collar.

Starting at £60

whippet onesie

Another bestseller is our Judd onesie, perfect for full coverage and keeping hounds cosy from neck to paw. It's designed for movement and made from GOTs certified organic cotton, it's also super easy to care for and can be washed on a gentle machine setting.

Starting at £70

Finally, every hound needs a waterproof. Our Søren is a must for the wetter months. Designed to be both practical and elegant whatever the weather, it's perfect for the rainy city morning commute or exploring the countryside on a wintry day.

Lifespan: 3+ years (longer if items are looked after correctly)

Usage: As soon as the weather gets chilly, wet or windy

Starting at £95

Made in the UK, these super plush beds are designed for hounds to burrow and snuggle, even when you’re not around to tuck them in.
